About the journal

The Mark Twain Journal is a twice-yearly periodical devoted to the life and works of the American author Mark Twain, drawing where possible on contemporary sources. The journal also explores his family and social relationships as well as his literary and intellectual connections.
Founded in 1936 by Cyril Clemens (Editor, 1936–82), it is one of the oldest journals devoted to a single author. Dr. Thomas A. Tenney edited it from 1983 until 2008. Dr. Alan Gribben served as editor from 2009 until 2020. In 2021, Dr. Joe B. Fulton became the editor and publisher. A national board advises the editor about policies and submissions. Submissions
The Mark Twain Journal: The Author and His Era particularly welcomes well-documented biographical, historical, and literary articles but will also consider critical essays of general interest. Authors of accepted articles will receive two copies of the issue in which their essay appears.
In general, the journal follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. The MTJ does not use in-text citations or footnotes, instead employing endnotes followed by a bibliography. Articles typically range from note-length (500 words) to thirty pages (12,000 words). However, we accept longer essays if the topic merits it. Merriam Webster's Third New International Dictionary is consulted for spelling and usage.
Specifics: Olivia, not Livy; Clemens's, not Clemens', and nineteenth century, not 19th century. Writers may refer to either Sam Clemens or Mark Twain, but we prefer consistency in the absence of a compelling reason for variety.
Permissions: The author warrants that the submitted essay has not been previously published in any media. The author is responsible for obtaining any required permissions for any quotations or images used in the article.

Legacy Scholars Beginning with the Spring 2014 issue, the Mark Twain Journal commenced a new feature, "Legacy Scholars," designed to summarize the achievements of those who have made a long-term impact on the field of Mark Twain studies. This recognition is intended as a token of debt that a great many of us owe to these scholars and their innovative publications. |
